Walking/On is a short audio piece – a remembering, a summoning, a transformation of a score performed by Claire Cunningham and Jess Curtis called ‘Walking On’. In the score, Claire, supported by her crutches on the ground, would walk on Jess’ body as he moved, rolled, curled, slid, and shifted horizontally across the ground.
It also is shaped by the practices of audio description that were embedded in the show, and which ignited Jess’ interest in audio description and collaboration with visually impaired artists.
Please note this piece speaks of issues of loss and bereavement.
Walking/On was created as an audio piece which you can access above. A captioned version and transcript can be found below.

Created for Duetrospectives, a collection of Jess Curtis’ duets reimagined after his passing in 2024, Walking/On steps and speaks on/of past dances from Claire and Jess’ duet The Way You Look (at me) Tonight. It draws from voice recordings, rehearsal notes/writings, and the sound world created by Matthias Herrmann.
Walking/On first premiered live on 28 May 2026 as part of Duetrospectives by GRAVITY in San Francisco, and has since been shown as part of PLEASE.STAY.TOUCH., presented by Fort Mason Art & GRAVITY.
